- The Black Grouper (Mycteroperca bonaci) is a large species of grouper found in the western Atlantic, from Massachusetts to Brazil. It has a robust body with a square-shaped tail and is known for its dark, mottled pattern that helps it blend into rocky and coral reefs. This fish can grow up to 2.4 m (8 ft) in length and weigh as much as 200 kg (440 lb). Black Groupers are a popular choice for commercial and recreational fishing, but overfishing has led to a decline in their populations, placing them on the near-threatened list.
