Leviathan

The Leviathan is a monster that is encountered at random in the open waters or when the player sails to the edge of the map. If the player ignores the warning to go back, the Leviathan will eat the player.

The Leviathan can be encountered in the Open Ocean either between regions, or at/beyond the borders of the map. At sufficiently high Panic, the Leviathan will appear and surface its large fin near the Boat. If the player does not return to shallower waters quickly after being spotted, the Leviathan will emerge from the water and instantly kill the player regardless of how much health the boat has. This attack cannot be avoided regardless of speed, even with Haste, and the Leviathan cannot be Banished. Manifest is the only ability that can save the player from certain death.

In Obelisk N15, it is implied that the Leviathan has some relationship with the Ancient Lighthouse and the ancient civilization of Devil's Spine. Being seen in the vision to raise up to the fire, and call out to it in a soft, guttural song, before slinking back to the waves.

Based on the good ending, and the fact that it only attacks you at very high panic and if you try to sail away into open sea, it is implied to be a force for good, attempting to contain the eldritch horrors unleashed by the book.

Plot

The following information contains spoilers regarding the story or ending of the game. Discretion is advised.

During the secret "good" ending, where the Fisherman throws the book back into the sea, the Leviathan appears to swallow him and his boat. Afterwards, the fog will clear and reveal an aurora borealis in the clear night sky.
