Real-Life Counterpart

  • Dunkleosteus is a prehistoric genus of placoderm fish that lived during the Late Devonian period, approximately 358 to 382 million years ago. Recognized as one of the largest and most formidable marine predators of its time, Dunkleosteus could grow up to 10 meters (33 feet) in length and had a massive, armored body with a distinctively large head. Its jaws were lined with sharp, bony plates instead of teeth, allowing it to exert tremendous bite force and effectively capture prey such as smaller fish and invertebrates. Fossils of Dunkleosteus have been discovered in North America and Europe, providing crucial insights into the diversity and evolution of early vertebrates. This formidable predator played a significant role in shaping marine ecosystems during the Devonian, often regarded as one of the first apex predators in the oceans. The extinction of Dunkleosteus coincided with the mass extinction events at the end of the Devonian period, which marked significant changes in marine biodiversity. Its study helps paleontologists understand the evolution of jawed vertebrates and the ecological dynamics of ancient seas.

History

The Dunkleosteus's aberration, the Excoriated Fiend, was teased on the dredge.game website before the Iron Rig trailer was released. The name of the image was accidentally leaked, making Dunkleosteus the only confirmed fish players had no idea what the game art would look like.
