Fish
Fish are creatures that can be caught using a Rod, Net, or Crab Pot. They can be collected in the inventory and sold for a profit to the Fishmonger or Travelling Merchant.
Catching
Disturbed Water
Most Fish are caught in Disturbed Water, patches of the sea where the fish can be seen swimming below the surface. The player can pull up alongside these attractions and attempt to go fishing, but will need the proper equipment.
There are 8 Fish Types:
The Iron Rig DLC added an advanced type of each:
Finally, this wiki has two other types to cover crab pots, and the Material Harvester and Flotsam Trap:
Each type can only be caught by certain rods, purchasable from the Shipwright and Traveling Merchant after researching.
Fishing in disturbed water involves a minigame with a fishing meter indicated on the left and a bar that spins around a wheel. As the fish on the meter gets closer to the top, the actual fish is closer to being caught. When the fish icon goes all the way up on the meter, the fish will be caught.
If the player has a functional Rod equipped, then green sections of the bar will appear. The player can click "Fish" or hit the F key while over these green sections to reel the fish in much quicker. Without a rod, it is impossible to catch fish. If all onboard rods are damaged, it is possible to fish in disturbed water, but the green segments will not appear, leaving no choice but to let the meter slowly complete on its own.
Occasionally, a golden segment will appear on the wheel in addition to the green ones. If the player is able to time their click correctly to land on this segment, they will catch a "trophy" fish, with an extra large size and value.
- There is a 7.5% chance of a trophy notch, or 40% for bait.
- Four fish must be caught after a trophy for another to have the chance of occurring.
Trawling
Trawling involves using a Net. The Net can be placed down behind the boat as an Ability and will be dragged along behind it, passively catching fish as the boat moves. The net has its own separate inventory space in which the fish are amassed. Nets will need to be repaired regularly.
There are several fish types that can only be caught through trawling, such as the Aurora Jellyfish and the Anchovy.
Crab Pots
Some creatures can be caught using crab pots. These items can be dropped into the ocean and will passively collect whatever crabs are in the area. If left for too long, however, they will break.
Many creatures can only be caught in crab pots, including the Spider Crab and the Crown of Thorns.
Size
Fish can vary in size. Larger fish are more valuable. A fish that is on the top 15% of it's size range will be considered a "trophy" and be worth a much higher amount than normal. Every fish can be a trophy, including aberrations. At the max size, the base price of a fish is increased by 25%.
Condition
See Also: Infection
Fish have a condition which slowly degrades. Condition will degrade one level every 12 hours (The fish introduced with the Iron Rig DLC degrade one level every 24 hours instead). This condition starts as "Fresh" but slowly deteriorates to "Stale", then "Rotting.", and finally deteriorates to become worthless Rot, taking up only one inventory slot. Because the status Infected is stored in the same slot as freshness, an Infected Fish cannot progress to a pile of Rot.
Before accounting for the size of the fish,
- Fresh Fish are worth 100% of their value.
- Stale Fish are worth 70%
- Rotting Fish are worth 35%
- Infected Fish are worth 35%

Aberrations
Aberrations are mutated fish that are dissimilar in appearance to their standard counterparts. They can be caught in the same disturbed waters as any other fish. Aberrations are guaranteed when there is a green glow above the fishing spot. Other ways to increase the odds of catching one include fishing at night, using some cursed equipment.
