  • The Horseshoe Crab (Limulus polyphemus) is an ancient marine arthropod found along the Atlantic coast of North America and in Southeast Asia. It has a hard, horseshoe-shaped shell and a long, pointed tail spine called a telson. Horseshoe Crabs can grow up to 60 cm (24 in) in length, including the tail. They are not true crabs but are more closely related to spiders and scorpions. Horseshoe Crabs are important for medical research, as their blue blood contains a substance used to test the sterility of medical equipment. While not endangered, their populations are declining due to habitat loss and overharvesting.
