Real-Life Counterpart

• The Barreleye (Macropinna microstoma) is a deep-sea fish known for its transparent, dome-shaped head through which its barrel-shaped eyes can be seen. It has a small, slender body and can grow up to 15 cm (6 in) in length. Barreleyes are found at depths of 600 to 800 meters (2,000 to 2,600 ft) in the Pacific Ocean. Their unique eyes are adapted to detect the faint bioluminescence of prey in the deep ocean. Barreleye populations are not well-studied due to their remote habitat, but they are not currently considered threatened.
