• The Viperfish (Chauliodus sloani) is a fearsome-looking deep-sea predator found in tropical and temperate waters worldwide. It has a long, slender body with a large mouth full of needle-like teeth, and it can grow up to 60 cm (24 in) in length. Viperfish are known for their ability to produce light from photophores along their body, which they use to attract prey. These fish inhabit depths of up to 5,000 m (16,400 ft) and are not a threat to humans. Their populations are stable, but their deep-sea environment makes them difficult to study.
