• The Longfin Eel (Anguilla dieffenbachii) is a migratory fish found in the freshwater rivers and lakes of New Zealand. It has a long, snake-like body and can grow up to 2 m (6.6 ft) in length. Longfin Eels are known for their remarkable life cycle, which includes a long migration to the Pacific Ocean to spawn, after which they die. Juvenile eels, known as glass eels, return to freshwater to grow and mature. Longfin Eels are a traditional food source for the Māori people, but their populations have declined due to habitat loss, overfishing, and barriers to migration.
