• The Firefly Squid (Watasenia scintillans) is a small, bioluminescent squid found in the waters of Japan. It has a slender, torpedo-shaped body and is known for its ability to emit light from special organs called photophores, creating a mesmerizing display of blue light in the water. Firefly Squid can grow up to 7 cm (2.8 in) in length. They are most famous for their mass spawning events in Toyama Bay, where millions of squid gather, creating a spectacular light show. Firefly Squid populations are stable, and they are not currently considered endangered.
