What to do?

Not to be a broken record, but the most active editors collaborate over on the Discord Server.

We currently have three main goals.

  1. Consolidating stub articles.
  2. Exploding excessively long articles.
  3. Increasing the ease of finding information.

Consolidating

Since we left the fandom wiki, it has become increasingly obvious that not every single things needs it's own page. This kind of article mostly comes from well meaning users who search the exact name of an item or idea, and created the page when they didn't find exactly what they searched for. And I'll be the first to admit this behaviour, as when I started I was just following the trends I could see. But now that we have moved away from Fandom, we hope to make this wiki easier to navigate and read.

Two great examples of how we are trying to consolidate pages are Ice Blocks, instead of Large Ice Block and Small Ice Block. There would be nowhere near enough info about each for them to have their own page. Instead, one single page discusses both, while the individual pages are made to be redirects so nobody creates them by accident. Another great example is the Wildlife page. As of writing this, it's not the prettiest page with the image layout, but it is considerably better than having a Wildlife Category with 10 or more pages containing a single sentence each. I (Cheboygan) was the user to make all those pages in the first place, and it was honestly what made me want to fork the wiki. A big thanks to those who contributed to that effort in reworking those pages.

Exploding

We haven't begun to break up these pages yet, but one of the pages we've identified is the Fish page. While certainly not egregious in any way, some have felt that the page is quite long, and can sometimes be hard to find the exact info you're looking for. An some of the subsections could really be expanding into their own article, like the Condition section about freshness. However, this doesn't take priority over consolidating.

Ease of Searching

Consolidating will be the most effective at this, but we also want to improve this in other ways. One way we can do this is by silo-ing our information by kind. For example, the new Items page we made. The old wiki merely kicked you to the Category:Items page, which was unwieldy, and was what led to every single item having it's own page. However, the Items page is in no way meant to describe the function of each item. Rather, it outlines the traits of that item in relation to items as a whole; where to get it, how big it is, what it looks like, etc. So the lights don't detail their lumens, and the rods don't detail their catch rate, and the trinkets don't detail their dollar value. They are all treated with like terms. This should help pages from becoming bloated. I like a good Table as much as the next person, but we have to ensure they don't grow unwieldy.

Page Improvements

If you're looking for some quick things to improve:

  • Each Fish page needs a map of locations they can spawn.
  • Each Fish page could have a gif of their specific catching minigame.
  • Proofread pages for inconsistent term usage. For example, Rock Slabs are often referred to as altars or shines among others, even though the Altar and shrines are terms used elsewhere in DREDGE.
  • We need an improved SPOILER template, as the one we migrated over doesn't allow for each spoiler to be expanded upon independently.
  • Duplicate media, mostly images, need to be removed from the site. Ensure that all pages are using the highest quality version before deleting the lower quality image.
