Real-Life Counterpart
- The Loosejaw (Malacosteus niger), also known as the Black Dragonfish, is a deep-sea fish known for its unique jaw structure that allows it to open its mouth extraordinarily wide. It has a long, slender body with bioluminescent organs along its sides and can grow up to 25 cm (10 in) in length. Loosejaws inhabit depths of up to 2,000 m (6,600 ft) and are adapted to the low-light conditions of the deep ocean. They are not a threat to humans and their populations are considered stable, though little is known about their overall numbers due to their remote habitat.
