The Deity

The Deity is an enormous, mysterious creature that appears in the Default ending/Bad ending of DREDGE. It can be considered the game's overarching antagonist as it is presumably the creator of the aberrations and is presumably the cause of the madness and evil influence throughout the game, whether intentionally or just as a byproduct of existing.

As an eldritch horror of unknowable origins, it is impossible to speculate on The Deity's intentions, and there is no way to categorize them as good or evil. But the influence they spread can be considered evil, just by the damage it does to the world and the humans living in it.

It is implied that the lighthouses are able to hold back the creature's influence, and perhaps the creature itself, from the islands. The Ancient Lighthouse appears to have been able to stave it off from destroying the ancient civilization of the Devil's Spine. But the lighthouse was destroyed in a volcanic eruption, and the ancient civilization was completely destroyed by both the eruption and by the evil that invaded them after the light went out.

In the default ending of the game, The Deity rises from the bottom of the sea, far to the west of Greater Marrow, having been awoken by the spell the Collector used to bring his wife back from the depths. In the end credits, Greater Marrow is burning, and the lighthouse has been destroyed, implying that there is nothing to stop the eldritch horrors beneath the waves from influencing the islands.
