Real-Life Counterpart

Xiphactinus is an extinct genus of predatory fish that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 100 to 66 million years ago.

Known for its impressive size, Xiphactinus could grow up to 6 meters (20 feet) in length, making it one of the largest bony fish of its time. This species is characterized by its elongated, streamlined body, sharp teeth, and powerful jaws, which were well-adapted for capturing prey.

Fossils of Xiphactinus have been discovered in North America, particularly in marine sedimentary deposits, indicating that it inhabited open ocean environments.

It is believed to have been an apex predator, feeding on smaller fish and other marine creatures. The discovery of partially digested remains in some fossils suggests that Xiphactinus was a voracious eater, capable of consuming prey nearly as large as itself.

Its extinction coincided with the mass extinction event at the end of the Cretaceous, which wiped out many marine species, including the Xiphactinus.
