- Nipponites is an extinct genus of ammonite that thrived during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 100 to 66 million years ago. Recognized for its distinctive coiled shell, Nipponites features a unique form with a complex suture pattern and ornate shell ornamentation, often characterized by a ribbed or tuberculate surface. Fossils of this ammonite have been predominantly found in marine sedimentary deposits in Japan and other regions of East Asia, indicating it inhabited shallow marine environments. As a cephalopod, Nipponites is believed to have been a free-swimming predator, preying on small marine organisms. Its intricate shell structure not only served as a buoyancy aid but also provided some protection against predators.
