Real-Life Counterpart
- Osteostracans are an extinct group of jawless fish that thrived during the Silurian and Devonian periods, approximately 450 to 360 million years ago. They are characterized by their bony armor, which covered their head and body, and their unique, flattened shapes. Osteostracans could reach lengths of up to 1 m (3.3 ft) and are thought to have lived in freshwater and marine environments. They primarily fed on small particles and possibly small invertebrates through a filter-feeding mechanism. Although Osteostracans are no longer present, they provide valuable insights into the evolution of vertebrates and the early diversification of jawless fish.
